Starting off in event photography can be a pretty daunting challenge, the initial outlay for the printer, media kits, studio lights, camera, transmitters etc, can easily get over the ten thousand pound mark, even more if you do not have a car! So going into the event photography market gradually, can be the safest option.
- Learn from the best, look for talks hosted by established event photographers (Photomart hosts several of these shows every year, with excellent speakers, demonstrations and offers on event equipment). See up-coming Photomart Events
- Try to get work as a second shooter for established photographers, at this stage you may only need a camera.
- By gaining experience and a reputation you can get work with other photographers and agencies, you may even get work franchised out to you. There are event photography forums on the internet where jobs get posted and you can advertise your skills.
- Once you are ready and have the right equipment, you can start finding your own work, contact organizations and get business cards made. Again there are a number of one-day courses specifically designed to teach these skills. These courses are an invaluable source of information.
- Try to specialise in a specific area, many photographers make enough money shooting the things they love, classic cars, motorbikes, clubbing and religious outings/festivals. You cant ask for more in a job than the freedom to work your own hours, excellent earnings and have a good time travelling to new places, being a part of the things you enjoy.
