Categories & Awards
Beauty of Light
There are four categories for submitting images at this year’s awards. The first category, ‘Beauty of Light’, challenges participants to showcase their skills and ability in the effective use of light. There is no restriction on subject matter in this category as long as the “influence of light” is clearly demonstrated. Submissions for this category will also be considered for the grand prize.
Black and White
There is also a black and white category for this year’s awards. Freed from the bonds of colour, black and white photography empowers the artist to apply variations of line and shade to create a more abstract and subjective interpretation of his or her subject. It is the ideal medium for highlighting mood and tone and can be used to great effect for creating nostalgic and enduring imagery by capturing key moments in time.
Embark on a journey of discovery to the land of the United Arab Emirates. Explore its visual riches and captivating landmarks, from a sea of sandy dunes and sprawling business districts to tall and majestic structures that pierce and scrape the vast desert skies. Your challenge is to unearth magical and previously ‘undiscovered’ or unheard of locations and to tell the story of the rich culture and history of the people of United Arab Emirates through the lens and viewfinder of your camera.
Imagination knows no boundaries! Express yourself freely and test the limits of your creativity by submitting your favourite images for competing in the fourth and final category. The purpose of this category is to encourage photographers to submit images that may not perhaps be eligible for any of the other three and thereby making the competition accessible to all, including the world’s very best photographers!
The ‘Special Awards’ category is a fifth category of awards that recognises selected individuals and/or groups who have contributed distinguished service and expertise to the photographic industry and to reward their tireless efforts and often countless hours of behind-the-scenes work.
The “Photography Appreciation Award” is presented to the person or group that have shown a long-standing commitment to enhancing the art of photography.
The “Photographic Research/Report Award”, is awarded for the most comprehensive research compiled in the field of photography.
The Hamdan International Photography Award is open to everyone and governed by the rules and guidelines of the competition. For more information, please visit the HIPA website and be sure to get your entries in before the deadline of the competition, 31st December 2012!
