Reuters reported this morning (19 January 2012) that Eastman Kodak Co. has filed for “Chapter 11″ which is the term for bankruptcy protection in the US. It postpones a company’s financial obligations to its trade creditors thus giving it time to reorganise its debts or sell parts of the business to restore liquidity.

In a telephone interview with Bloomberg, Walter Todd, who helps manage $950 million at Greenwood Capital in Greenwood South Carolina USA, says Kodak have “missed the boat with the transition to digital but they do have some valuable assets”. It is estimated that the Rochester based company may be holding patents worth five times more than the business itself, making the 131- year-old camera company a prime acquisition target [...]
Kodak has previously outlined similar plans but earlier this week, writing in the Wall Street Journal confirmed that Kodak will also sell off one of their most valuable patents, the image-previewing patent. It was further reported that the image-previewing patent is currently at the centre of a legal dispute between Kodak and smart phone manufacturers, Apple and Research In Motion (RIM) over patent right infringements [...]
